Washington County VA Habitat for Humanity

370 E. Main St, Suite C
276-258-5469

Habitat for Humanity is an international, nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry, which seeks to eliminate poverty housing from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.  Habitat is dedicated to the ideal that all people deserve a simple, decent, affordable place to live.  Its work is based upon the principles of compassion, service, tolerance, and love. Worldwide, Habitat has built more than 500,000 homes.

Habitat holds the mortgages for its homes, which are paid back as interest free loans.  The monthly income Habitat receives from its mortgages is used to build more homes.  Those who have been selected to become Habitat homeowners must make a substantial investment of time and energy into the building project and other activities.  This is known as "sweat equity."

Over the past several years Habitat has built four houses in Abingdon, one in Meadowview, and two in Glade Springs. In the spring of 2014, Habitat is partnering with Faith Builders, a coatition of three local churches- Woodland Hills Christian Church, Green Springs Presbyterian Church, and Sinking Springs Presterian Church to build a house at 242 Taylor Street in Abingdon.
