United Way of Greater Kingsport
About Us :
The United Way of Greater Kingsport began in 1922, as a fund raising project of the Kingsport Businessmen's Club to support local community needs.
In 1934 we were chartered as the Kingsport Area Community Chest in the State of Tennessee.
In 1985, the United Way moved to the Dickson Center.
In 1988, the Board of Directors approved a name change to the "United Way of Greater Kingsport" and affiliated for the first time with the United Way of America and its 2300 members.
In 2000, the Board of Directors sold the Dickson Center and the United Way of Greater Kingsport moved to its present location at 727 N. Eastman Road.
This represented a shift in philosophy, as well, moving from an organization that raised funds for a variety of worthy community improvement projects to an organization dedicated to developing and supporting a local system of health and human services.
In joining the United Way movement, the United Way of Greater Kingsport became part of a "tradition of caring" in the United States that started in 1897, in Denver, Colorado. Brought together by a local woman, five clergymen started an organization that was revolutionary for its time. It was based on the belief that private citizens could come together, raise funds and solve community problems.
Through the years, the United Way has played several roles in communities: raising funds for bonds during the World Wars, acting as the fund-raising arm of a federation of "member" agencies; being a catalyst for community planning and problem solving. The keystone of any United Way is that it is "volunteer driven" and "true to" the needs identified by its local stakeholders.

The mission of the United Way of Greater Kingsport is to be the single most effective way to identify, address and support solutions to local community health and human service needs.
