Overview and Mission

The Troup County Historical Society is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to promoting a greater appreciation of Troup County's heritage. The Troup County Historical Society was founded in April, 1972, as the Ocfuskee Historical Society. The name changed in 1981. The purpose of the Troup County Historical Society is "to increase and diffuse knowledge and a greater appreciation of sites, structures, events, personalities, and all other things which pertain to the development of Troup County, Georgia, and to acquire, hold, improve, preserve, develop and restore sites, buildings, and residences or other structures of historic and architectural interest, to promote tours, establish educational institutions and museums, to foster archeological research, mark Indian trails and to prepare and sell publications." The Troup County Historical Society meets periodically and publishes a quarterly newsletter. The Society is an Affiliate Chapter of the Georgia Historical Society.

Holdings include Troup County government and court records, City of LaGrange records, and files of Troup County Education. Both records management and archival services are provided to the local governments. Typical records under the Archives care include 1828 Superior Court cases, 1930s school records, non-current court and office files, and tax digests dating back to 1893. Guidelines from the Georgia Department of Archives and History are used to determine how long and in what form records are to be kept.
