Town of Newfane Historical Society

2165 Lockport Olcott Rd
716-778-7197

The Newfane Historical Society has two locations. On Rt 78 in the hamlet of Burt stands the Van Horn Mansion. The mansion was in a run down state of repair when the then present owner Noury Chemical Co. graciously made a gift of the building in 1987 to the Newfane Historical Society along with a money gift to start the restoration. The town pulled together and through the efforts of volunteers the building was restored to its original grandeur and earned it's place on the National Registry of Historical Buildings.

James Van Horn built the mansion in 1823 and the first town meeting where the Town of Newfane was formed was held in 1824 in the Van Horn living room.

The second location is on the festival grounds on the West Creek Road in Newfane, NY where is located a log cabin housing various artifacts from early settlers as well as civil war relics. Also on the West Creek grounds is located a General Store depicting the 1800 period, a One Room School house, a Gazebo, a Hotdog stand, the Hausman House, Yarb house, the old Burt Post Office, Barns housing various antique engines, tractors and farm equipment, a Blacksmiths Shop and a Civil War Re-enactors village.

The Newfane Historical Society has many facets of interest including the Postcard Club, Civil War re-enactors club, Garden Club, Van Horn Committee, and Festival Committee.

We hold two festivals a year. The first being the Apple Blossom Festival held the third Sunday in May and the second being the Harvest Festival which is held the first Sunday in October.

The public is welcome to join our friendly group and our yearly fees are nominal. An application is available online. Inquiries can be made by calling 716-778-7197 or by emailing [email protected]
