Town of Galway

5910 Sacandaga Road
518-882-6070

Galway has an interesting history. The first permanent white settlers were seven families from Gallowayshire in Scotland. They located on Scotch Street (Sacandaga Road) between what is now the Galway Cemetery next to the Galway Central School and the town line in Charlton. Other settlers soon came from Rhode Island and northern New Jersey. Known at first as New Galloway, the name was shortened to Galloway in 1785 and through a clerk’s error in 1792 became Galway.
