About The Schodack Central School District...

The Schodack schools strive to develop young people intellectually and equip them with the skills needed to live productively as adults. A well-organized, comprehensive curriculum taught by a highly professional, experienced faculty in a stimulating environment has helped Schodack students compile a superior record of academic achievement over the years.

Our schools also seek to nurture the character of each student. The personalized atmosphere of the Schodack schools allows our students many opportunities to grow personally as well as academically. Our schools help students develop self-confidence, integrity, respect for others and commitment to excellence.

A full range of services is available in each building, including library and media centers, music, art, physical education, special education, remediation, extracurricular activities and challenges for highly able learners. Most of our faculty members have more than 10 years experience and master's degrees; teachers are actively involved in their continuing professional development.

The schools serves a central social as well as educational role, with the facilities being used off-hours for youth recreation, Scouting and other community activities. The schools invites parents and other adults to many activities, including the Castleton Elementary School Morning Program, middle and high school music and drama performances, the annual Fall Sports Weekend and other athletic events. Senior citizens may obtain Gold Cards which permit them to attend many school activities without cost; there are also three senior citizen luncheons every year in the schools.

The district'ís commitment to the community is also evident in its well-rounded Continuing Education program which offers a variety of recreational and educational programs for adults. Community members often serve on special committees, with shared decision-making and open lines of communication the norm.

The District is administered by the Superintendent of Schools, the Director of Business and Support Services, a principal in each building, the Director of Pupil Personnel Services and the District Curriculum /Technology Coordinator. A nine-member Board of Education meets twice a month during the school year and monthly in the summer.

The Schodack Central School District is a 34-square-mile rural/suburban district in Southern Rensselaer County, comprising most of the Town of Schodack and a small part of the Town of Stuyvesant in Columbia County. The Schodack Central School District was formed out of a number of small, rural schools in the late 1940s. Originally a Dutch settlement along the banks of the Hudson River, the area was largely agricultural until the late 20th century, when it became more suburban. Our proximity to the state capital allows for many links between Schodack Central and a variety of educational, cultural and political institutions.

The school district serves about 1,200 students in three buildings. Castleton Elementary School is located on the corner of Scott and Campbell avenues in the Village of Castleton and has about 400 students in kindergarten through third grade. Grades four through eight, with about 450 pupils, are housed in Maple Hill Middle School on South Schodack Road. Maple Hill High School, adjacent to the middle school on Maple Hill Road, has about 350 students in grades 9 through 12.
