Sanborn Area Historical Society

School House Museum, 2822 Niagara Street
716-990-6909

The Sanborn Area Historical Society is located in the unincorporated Village of Sanborn, New York. Sanborn is located in Niagara County, the northwestern most county in New York State. While historically the original village was located at the western end of Cambria, the Sanborn Area now falls over the corporate limits of the Towns of Cambria, Lewiston and Wheatfield. Visitors to Sanborn and the Historical Society need only travel Route 31 East from Niagara Falls or Route 31 West from Lockport or Route 429 from North Tonawanda.

The Sanborn Area Historical Society brings to life the history of the Sanborn area in the SCHOOLHOUSE MUSEUM at 2822 Niagara Street. Sanborn, NY. Formed in 1996, its first project was to move the one-room West Street School over frozen ground to the corner of West and Niagara Streets. Since that time, the school has been converted to a first class museum complete with handicap accessibility and a top of the line office for record keeping.

The numerous exhibits include artifacts from the life and times of early settlers in this area, dating from the early 1800s. In addition, there are one-of-a-kind artifacts not available for viewing in much larger museums. Since its opening, many have visited the museum and school groups and clubs have taken advantage of the special tours offered.

THE FARM MUSEUM is located at 2660 Saunders Settlement Road (Route 31). Sanborn, NY. We purchased the 56 acre Nancy and Leonard Wienke farm property with its 120-year old vintage barn. This was a logical decision based on the Heberling Associates Inc. "Feasibility Study" recommendation to develop a Farm Museum.... “a historic farm.... a living history agricultural center”.

This property on Saunders Settlement Road actually borders our museum property at the rear. Both have the railroad property as a southern boundary.
