Mount Gilead Baptist Church Of Fort Gaines

808 Cotton Hill Rd
229-768-2789

About Us:

Mt. Gilead was constituted on the 3rd Saturday in July 1822, making it older than Clay County itself. The land was donated and deeded by J. Hugh Edge. The first building was of round pine poles and served as a school house. Mt. Gilead once was a very wealthy church with a large enrollment of members, most of whom were slave and land owners. Mt. Gilead joined the Bethel Baptist Association in 1839 in Americus, GA. The pastor at that time was Reverend Jim Davis who lived between Cotton Hill and Georgetown, GA. Also in that year, four were baptized and eight were received by letter, making the total membership of nineteen. In 1932, the present building together with the five acre tract of land is valued at $750.00. Mt. Gilead has been actively in use since its formation in 1822.
