Kiwanis Club of Kingsport

The first Kiwanis Club was chartered on January 21, 1915, in Detroit, Michigan. Today, the Kiwanis family has grown to number almost 16,000 clubs and over 600,000 men, women and youth in more than 70 countries and geographic areas. Kiwanis Clubs sponsor community service projects and raise funds to pay for these projects.

Kiwanis International chartered the Kiwanis Club of Kingsport on January 29, 1924. Current local Kiwanis service projects include support for the elderly residents of Kiwanis Towers, coats, shoes and socks for needy children in local elementary schools and a Reading Partnership with students at Kennedy and Roosevelt Elementary Schools. The club also assists the Salvation Army with its annual bell-ringing and sponsors candidate forums prior to local elections for Board of Mayor and Alderman and Kingsport School Board.

The Kiwanis family of clubs around the world invested more than $113 million in their communities with a special emphasis on meeting the needs of young children. Kiwanis members also volunteered more than 21 million hours toward their service activities.

Kiwanis International's continuing service emphasis is "Young Children: Priority One." Under this theme, each Kiwanis Club is encouraged to sponsor significant projects that serve the special needs of young children from prenatal development to age 5. In a typical year, "Young Children: Priority One" service projects involve more than $14 million and 1 million volunteer hours.

In 1994, Kiwanis clubs conducted the first Kiwanis Worldwide Service Project in partnership with UNICEF. Kiwanis raised more than $100 million to assist nations in eliminating iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), the leading preventable cause of mental retardation in the world today. IDD projects have been funded in 95 nations. UNICEF estimates that Kiwanis-funded IDD programs are protecting more than 75 million newborn children from diminished mental skills each year.

Over the past 84 years, the Kiwanis Club of Kingsport has been making a positive impact on the quality of life in our local area.
