History Of The Church

This Church was organized on the fourth Sunday in Augusta, in the year of our Lord 1812, by the board of Christian works, with their hearts and minds instilled on the building up of God's kingdom here on earth.

Our history is a historical account of people, compiled over the years with whatever production may be drawn from oral accounts. It is more important than present events; for on many cases it is concerned with the works of our forefathers, and loaded with memories of those who laid this foundation in hope of what we see today as established facts.

This account may meet with objections on account of what it does not record, rather than inaccuracy o f the facts stated. This history has been handed down to us; this church was organized in the dark days of slavery. Our historical written and oral history states that we are approximately 189 years old.

We can't say whose heart the Lord touched first, but the Lord revealed it to someone. They received a letter of dismissal from the old Historical Springfield Baptist Church, Augusta, Georgia. They then organized and dedicated themselves under the name of "First Ebenezer" Baptist Church and begun their labor, at this time their leader is unknown.

This Church has sent forth two daughter's, who are doing accredit able work. Second Ebenezer with Rev. Angelo Hatcher holding the wheel of time as God turns it. This church was organized in the year of our Lord 1879.

Also Spring Grove Baptist Church with which Rev. Howard Harding is now pastor. May he live long to sound the alarm for Jesus. Rev. Harding is carrying on great work in the service of our Lord. All of this proves this Church has not been idle.

Our historical records state that there were certain men who were set apart by this Church to the Gospel Ministry. Minister's Alexander Griffin, Lindsey Combs, Josiah Carter, Floyd Graham, Elam Griffin, E.C. Carswell and Earnest Williams. The first pastors we record are Reverend's Peter Johnson (1812), Kelly Lowe, Fran Beal, John C. Bryant, W.M. Hampton, A.L. Dentnack, Charles T. Walker, G.S. Johnson, Josiah Carter, W.W. Jones (1902--1929), F. Graham (1929-1930), O.C. Parker (1930-1931), C.H. Pickett (1931-1935), J.D. Williams (1935-1983), Tyrone Jones (1984), Amos Adams (1985-1993), Johnnie Bussey (1993-1999), and Rev Moses D. Anderson (2000-Present).

God has continually blessed us past and present as you can see from our website, and we will continue to pray, not only for his continued blessings to come down but for the blesser himself to make his presence known.

The First Ebenezer Baptist Church family strives to be doer's of God's Word and not just hearers, for we know all things for the good of those who love him.

To the First Ebenezer Family, these 189 years have been sailing upon water of an angry sea. Your way has been up and down. You have been mourning, weeping and praying in the name of the Lord. We will continue sailing on until the angel of death calls us from this world of pain and welcomes us into a heaven, where there is no sorrow or pain and death will be no more. We will forge ahead with a renewed spirit to meet the new challenges as the founding member's did 189 years ago. We thank God for his everlasting mercy and grace as look back through the years to "See What the Lord Has Done."
