A.M.E. Zion History

The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (A.M.E. Zion Church) was founded in 1796 by James Varick and members of the John Street Methodist Church in New York City. Racial segregation during communion and water baptism, along with the desire to worship as "free" persons led to the organization of the A.M.E. Zion Church. Past leaders include political and social activists such as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and Sojourner Truth. There are more than one million members worldwide.
