HISTORY:

Cooper Middle School is named after William “Bill” Cooper. Mr. Cooper was born in 1934 and was raised in the Austell-Powder Springs area. In 1952, he graduated from Powder Springs High School where he was known as a school leader and a sports enthusiast. After graduation he joined the U.S. Army, serving in Korea and attaining the rank of sergeant. Following his service in the Army, Mr. Cooper graduated from Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy in 1959. He owned and operated Cooper Drugs for eighteen years.

During the 1960’s, he began a political and public service career.  He was elected to the Cobb County Board of Education and served several terms in the State Legislature.  In 1987-88, he was named the director of the GA Drugs and Narcotic Agency, a position he held until he retired in 1994, because of ill health.

Mr. Cooper was active in the South Cobb community.  He served as PTA president at Hollydale Elementary School and McEachern High School.  He also served as president of the McEachern Band Boosters.

Mr. Cooper has been described as being kind, dedicated to helping others and being a friend to everyone in the community.  In short, he cared for people.  Mr. Cooper died in 1997.
