Buckeye Career Center
Our Mission
The mission of the Buckeye Career Center is to prepare youth and adults to make informed career choices and to successfully enter, compete, and advance in the changing world of work. This will be achieved by education and the business community offering comprehensive education, training, and support services that develop: Occupational skills, academic skills, and employability skills.
Our Promise
If at any time within two years of graduation an employer deems one of our graduates incapable of performing indicated competencies, the graduate may return for additional gratis training until such time as he or she is deemed competent.
History
On October 7th, 1963, the Ohio state legislature enabled county boards of education to establish vocational districts. On March 2nd, 1964, Garrison Finzer of Sugarcreek, representing the County Board of Education was selected Chairman, Kenneth Bartter of Dover representing the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce was elected Vice-Chairman, and Alga Weaver, County Home Extension Agent, was elected Secretary of the Buckeye Joint Vocational Board.
However, it was ten years later and after six different configurations had been voted down that a four member board comprised of a representative from Strasburg, New Philadelphia, Dover, and Conotton Valley submitted a bond issue which passed. Voters in the four districts, at one time or another had favored a JVS, and on November 1974 their 3 mill levy passed.
Strasburg Board of Education acted as the sponsoring organization with Paul Taylor, acting-superintendent. After approval by the State Board of Education, the remaining school districts of Tuscarawas County then joined by Board action. Carrollton and East Holmes soon followed. All told, eleven school districts with territory in five counties comprised the Buckeye JVS.
Buckeye operates satellite programs at Hiland, Berlin, Tuscarawas Valley, Indian Valley, Claymont, Newcomerstown, and Carrollton.
Buckeye Career Center also acts as a community center that hosts senior citizen luncheons, umpire meetings, 4-H and Girl Scout organizations, home & garden shows, craft shows, bridal shows, Turkey Association conventions, job fairs, and many home school sports and band banquets.
Over the years Buckeye has touched many lives. Buckeye's staff is proud of the school's history and is committed to a style of education within their communities that goes beyond just teaching.
