Mission And Goals

Educational Mission :

The mission of the Aiken County School District is to engage every student in educational experiences that develop maximum individual potential by creating and sustaining a secure learning environment of excellence (facilitated by highly professional educators and support staff in concert with parents and the community) so that all learners acquire knowledge, critical thinking patterns, social skills, and character necessary to live a life of quality in an increasingly global society.

An Area of Special Academic Emphasis:

Reading achievement at all grade levels (K-12), with special emphasis on direct reading instruction in grades K-3.

Fundamental Values

This district will be known for:

Safe learning environments where every student has the opportunity to achieve developmental outcomes at the highest potential,

Highly qualified educators and competent support persons who can orchestrate and facilitate exceptional learning outcomes at every level and who continue to grow personally and professionally throughout their careers,

Facilities that nurture effective learning practices for all students,

A transportation system that is safe, efficient, and accessible to all students,

Appropriate use of technology to further learning and to make information management more productive, and,

An organizational culture that encourages integrity, collegiality, high expectations for student success, student, parental and community engagement, and continuous improvement.

Accountability:

Our school district was one of the first in the state to implement a school accountability and school renewal system in 1996. The school district leads the state in efforts to improve school performance.

Goals

The percentage of students scoring basic and above on state testing in grades 3-8 will increase from baseline percentages to goal percentages by 2009-2010: from 78.4% to 91.6% in ELA; from 79.9% to 90% in Math; from 69.1% to 81.1% in Social Studies; and 65.7% to 80% in Science.

The percentage of students graduating from high school will be higher each year over the next five years.

Reduce class size in grades 4 through 9.

The district’s efforts to recruit and retain qualified top level teachers will increase.

The district will increase efforts to attract qualified substitute teachers.

Improve upon the communication network between parents, teachers, and administrators, particularly with an emphasis on gaining community support of the Board’s continuing efforts to maintain a high standard of expectation for student conduct and deportment through a strict but fair system of discipline.
