COEUR d’ALENE – There is a lot going on at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library as the All-Ages Summer Reading Program begins with the theme of ‘Forest of Possibilities.’  There are punch cards and online book reports for teen and adult patrons; the book reports are entered into our end-of-summer prize drawings, and completed punch cards get free books and are entered into the adult grand prize drawing. Children ages 0-4 play a bingo game and ages 5-12 fill out their reading logs with hours read; they both earn prizes, and are entered into the grand prize drawing, all summer long. The grand prize for both children’s age categories is a brand new bicycle.

The Historical Button Club of Northern Idaho, Eastern Washington, and Western Montana has created a delightful display of nature-themed buttons to complement our Summer Reading Program theme. The club was founded in 1976, is affiliated with the Idaho State Button Society as well as the National Buttons Society. Members in the club have been collecting for as many as 60 years, and some even longer than that. The library has created an I-Spy game around the display for children to play, discover the buttons, and earn prizes.

Richard Whittman, Biologist/Entomologist, has selected specimens, from a personal collection of over one million arthropods, to create another wonderful display in the entryway cases in the library. Whittman is permanently donating 100 cases of arthropods to North Idaho College, where they will be on public display starting this fall. The library display is a preview of the donation and artfully coincides with the Summer Reading Program theme ‘Forest of Possibilities.’
