OPENING SATURDAY, MAY 4 AT ESTABLISHED GALLERY

Established Gallery is proud to present Oak Cliff, the latest solo exhibition by African-American mixed media artist Demarcus McGaughey. Oak Cliff brings to life portraits and figures from the vibrant community of Black middle class families in Oak Cliff, Texas, McGaughey’s hometown. “This is where my artistic journey started," McGaughey says. This captivating exhibit pays tribute to his neighborhood with 20 vibrant contemporary works on canvas.

Skillfully created with acrylic paint, heavy texture, shades of gray, and saturated colors, the artwork delves into a dynamic world filled with themes of a renaissance of Black culture, childhood memories, the privilege of life long friendships, and the legacy of a community. The artist explains that his inspiration for this collection comes from the strong bonds he has maintained since childhood, highlighting the sense of pride that Oak Cliff embodies.

INFO & TIX

GET READY FOR THE GOWANUS ART PARADE!

March with Arts Gowanus on Saturday, June 1 in the first ever Gowanus Art Parade!

The theme is Creatures of the Canal – Real or Imaginary. Come rain or shine, join us and show us your creature creations!

Wear your art! Don your wackiest, most inventive, most Gowanus-y outfit! Transform yourself into an edgy egret, a harried heron, a crabby crab, a jaunty jellyfish, a yummy mummichog, a poised porpoise, a radioactive rat, a rabid raccoon, the legendary Sludgie the Whale, or any fantastical canal creature you fancy! Be fun and festive! Faux fur, feathers, fangs, flippers, tentacles, scales, sequins.... The weirder the better!

Carry your artwork! Posters, sculptures, puppets, banners, flags, effigies... bring them all! We want to see your most wondrous and bizarre creations come to life! Just make sure they are mobile and easy to carry throughout a procession.

We'll meet in the alleyway between 543 Union and 280 Nevins at 2:30pm and kick off the march at 3pm. The procession will traverse an iconic Gowanus bridge, traipse along the waterfront, and end at a community street festival at 2nd Street in front of the Gowanus Dredgers Boathouse. We'll be joined by Miss Gowanus Canal/Miss New York USA 2022 Finalist, Addie @adelinexvictoria!

The outdoor fest will feature Mookntaka's spectacular interactive sculpture Hedgehog, live music, and fun activities led by local organizations. Inside the Boathouse will be an art exhibition by Manju Shandler, an interactive installation by Hannah Robinett, and after the sun sets – in usual Arts Gowanus fashion – an afterparty!

More details to come, but get ready to come together and reinforce the community spirit in our beloved and rapidly changing neighborhood!

Please consider donating and helping us to continue our work!

Help us with our mission! Arts Gowanus works to support, promote, and advocate for artists and a sustainable local arts community. Please consider being part of the driving force that keeps artists in this community and helps them thrive. Whether you are an artist or art lover, your support makes possible professional development workshops for artists, exhibitions showcasing Gowanus artwork, the annual Gowanus Open Studios weekend, and ongoing advocacy for Gowanus and Gowanus artists.
