Local Heroes: Peter Morici

Peter A. Morici may not consider himself a hero. But it is people like Peter, using AmericanTowns all across America, who make a difference every day. Peter started “Adopt A Staten Island Soldier” a local organization that aims to supply every soldier in Staten Island and other units across the USA with supplies and encouragement.

For Peter Morici it all started while serving his country in the Vietnam War.  Captain Morici was adopted by his local community in the Bensonhurst, Bay Ridge sections of Brooklyn.  Receiving those supplies and letters meant so much to him that forty years later he decided to do the same for the men and women of Staten Island now serving in Iraq.

Today, they send packages of every day items like sunscreen, crackers and soap and have members of the community, from school children to adults write the soldiers supportive  letters from home.  Peter tells us to date, they have shipped over 400 boxes of supplies to individual soldiers, including members of the Marines, Air Force and Navy now stationed in Iraq. If you would like information on how to contribute to the “Adopt A Soldier” program, go to MyStatenIsland.com. Who knows, you might just end up making a difference in the life of a soldier far from home.
